How great the bagel is. A staple for existence. Filling. Fulfilling. Fantastic

A good bagel is great

A mediocre bagel is not

You deserve a great bagel

A properly made bagel is made by first cooking it in water — very hot boiling water — for one or two minutes to lock in its flavor. Then it's browned in the oven to create that hard, delectable crust

In more detail - Step 1: combine wheat flour, salt, water and yeast leavening to make the doughStep 2: mix the dough in a mixer for about 10 minutesStep 3: let dough stand for a whileStep 4: knead dough, then place in a bowl and let it rise until it has doubled in sizeStep 5: divide dough into balls, and then shape each ball into a bagelStep 6: carefully drop a few bagels at a time into a pot of boiling water for about 45 seconds, and flip each bagel once half way throughStep 7: remove any excess water from the bagels and then place on a greased baking sheetStep 8: top with flavored seasonings if preferredStep 9: bake bagels for about 30 minutes and then let coolStep 10: ENJOY!!

You too can make your own bagel, but if you just want to go buy one or a dozen, here's where to go

Great bagels are hard to come by outside larger ethnic cities

Greenville is not larger nor ethnic, but we do have a few decent bagels

1. Greenfields - still the best Greenville has to offer
2. Jersey Boys - a newcomer, but the real deal. A close #2
3. Broadway Bagels - they have been around the longest. That says something
4. Panera - a very respectable bagel
5. Einstein Bros. at Publix - not as good as at the Einstein Bros. Bagel shop itself (closest is Clemson), but still good

Honorable mention to the bagels that are baked at the better grocery stores - Lowes, Publix, Harris Teeter (not BiLo)

Also, Sully's Steamers is a good bagel experience, because anything steamed is good. The bagels themselves are just okThe streaming makes them really good

Most of the bagels you get at a breakfast restaurant are acceptable, at best (they mostly come from a foodservice company). Put Starbucks bagels on this level as well

Edible, but not really, are the sleeves you buy in the grocery store, i.e. Lenders, Sara Lee, etc. Make these your last resort

Remember - Good cream cheese goes a long way to making everything taste good
